Brief about hanging bridge, Kota
The Kota Hanging Bridge, also known as the Kota Cable Bridge, is a cable suspended bridge in Kota, Rajasthan, India. The bridge was inaugurated by the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, on 29th August 2017.
It is a part of the Kota Bypass that crosses the Chambal River in the outskirts of the city and connects city with Chittorgarh (NH 27) and Jaipur via bypass (NH52). The bridge is part of the East-West Corridor of the Golden Quadrangle Project of the National Highways Authority of India. NHAI maintains the bridge as on Date.
The bridge construction was halted for long time after one of its pillars collapsed in December 2009, killing at least 48 Personnel. The work was later resumed and the bridge was finally completed in 2017.
Engineering Details about Hanging Bridge Kota
The cable-stayed bridge has a single plain suspension with a main span of 350 meters and lateral spans of 175 meters on either side. It is approximately 60 meters high from the surface of the Chambal River. The bridge is 1.5 kilometers long and has a width of 30 meters, making it a 6-lane bridge over the River Chambal. The longest span of the bridge that has no support is around 350 meters.
The hanging bridge is supported by two huge concrete pillars on each side of the river. These pillars have a height of 125 meters and are responsible for holding the entire bridge with the help of cables.
Advance Signaling sensors in Hanging Bridge Kota
The signaling system has been developed to function during earthquakes, strong winds, thunderstorms, and heavy rains too. The bridge comes with a state-of-the art system such as-capable of handling extreme traffic-jam situations and is built to handle heavy rains, winds, storms and is even equipped with earthquake notification which is sent to the control room of the bridge.
Care for Aquatic Wild life of Chambal River Kota
As an alligator sanctuary falls under the bridge over the Chambal River, a 700-meter stretch of the bridge has been suspended with cables, thus giving it the name “hanging bridge”. The hanging bridge of Kota is the first of its kind in Rajasthan.
To prevent disturbance to wildlife, a 7.5 m Noise Barrier with approx 70% visibility in 700 m length on both side of the bridge has been installed.
To conclude
The bridge can handle a significant amount of traffic daily and can also accommodate conditions of traffic jams.
The Kota Hanging Bridge has become a major tourist attraction due to its impressive engineering, breathtaking views, and picturesque location.
The bridge is a significant milestone in India’s infrastructure is a testament to the resilience and determination of the Indian engineering community, who overcame several obstacles and challenges to complete the project.
